Rooted in community. Built with compassion.

Our Story

Michael's Ranch began with a family who believed their son deserved more.

In 1972, Emil ("Bud") and Eloisa Murphy founded Michael's House after searching for a place where their son, Michael, could be safe, supported, and given the opportunity to live a full life. At the time, there weren't many options for families raising loved ones with developmental disabilities. Institutional care was often the only path available, but the Murphys knew there had to be a better way.

So they built one.

What started as a home for Michael quickly became a home for others. As more families learned about the care, compassion, and sense of belonging they found at Michael's House, word spread throughout the community. The need continued to grow, and in 1986, a second Michael's House opened.

For the families who entrusted the Murphys with their loved ones, Michael's House became more than a place to live. It became a place where people gained confidence, learned to be more independent, and were treated with the dignity every person deserves.

A New Chapter

More than fifty years later, the mission is still the same.

People with developmental disabilities deserve a safe place to grow.

Today, that vision has expanded into Michael's Ranch.

The ranch was created because we believe growth happens through experience. It's a place where people can work with their hands, spend time outdoors, learn practical skills, build confidence, and try things they may never have imagined doing before.

Whether it's tending a garden, caring for animals, learning a new skill, or simply getting a little dirt on their boots, every experience is meant to encourage independence, self-reliance, and the confidence that comes from discovering what you're capable of.

The Values That Guide Us

Bud Murphy believed everyone deserved to feel important, loved, and included. His kindness drew people together, and his willingness to help others inspired a community that shared the same belief—that every person has value.

Those values continue to guide Michael's Ranch today.

We believe every individual deserves the opportunity to learn, to grow, to be challenged, and to be celebrated for who they are.

Looking Ahead

Michael's Ranch is still growing, just as the people we serve continue to grow.

Our hope is to create a place where future generations can discover new skills, build meaningful friendships, and experience the pride that comes from becoming more independent.

The Murphy family started this journey with one simple idea: create the kind of place they wanted for someone they loved.

We're honored to carry that legacy forward.
